Assistant Librarian


Fort Kent Public Library is set on 1 Monument Square in Fort Kent, ME. The community is nestled in the Maine North Woods and boasts stunning views of the St. John Valley which is a place of peace, beauty, and hope.


Purpose Statement:


Assist the Library Director and Librarians with the administration and organization of the FKPL. Keep the library running smoothly by helping library visitors find the right reference materials, process interlibrary loans, sign up visitors for their own library card, and maintain and keep clean the library and its collection.


Essential Functions:


Loan library materials such as books, ebooks, audiobooks and other items to patrons and collect the returned materials.

Catalog and maintain the library materials.

Handle loans between libraries.

Organize and reshelve returned items such as periodicals, books and other items.

Handle the registration of new library cardholders and issue library cards.

Teach people how to use the library resources.

Answer any questions from patrons.

Perform routine tasks such as answering phone calls and organizing files.

Use and maintain the computer library database to help locate library materials.

Help plan and participate in special library events such as Children’s Story Time, used book sales or other special programs.

Perform other functions and tasks as assigned.


Supervisor: Library Director


Education/Experience/Skill Requirements:


High school diploma or equivalent required

Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Strong communication, interpersonal and computer skills or ability to acquire the skills

Candidate must be detail oriented

Ability to follow oral and written instructions

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team


COVID-19 considerations:

All staff must be fully vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus and follow COVID-19 protocols set by the state.


Job Type: Part-time, 25 hours/week


Pay: $13.80 per hour

4- to 6-hour shifts, Tues-Saturday. Schedule could change depending on patron usage.
